Small business consultant or business advisor: which one do you actually need?

Noël Tarquinii
Short answer

If you need one problem diagnosed and a written plan, hire a consultant. If your business already makes money and you need someone in your corner making the next moves with you, you need an advisor who has run a business and still does the work.

A plan on paper turns into one more thing on your desk.

So what's the real difference?

A consultant comes in, studies the problem and leaves you a deck. That works when the problem is narrow and you've got people ready to run with it.

Most small teams don't have those people. The owner is the sales team, the ops team and the person answering email at 11 PM. A plan on paper turns into one more thing on your desk.

An advisor sits next to you through the decisions. Which deal to chase. Which hire to make first. Where the money's leaking. When to push and when to wait.

How do you know which one you need?

You need a consultant if the problem has a clear edge: a tax setup, a software rollout, a compliance review.

You need an advisor if the problem keeps moving: growth stalled, every deal still runs through you, and you can feel the ceiling.

What I do

I've sat in the CEO, COO, CAO and CHRO seats, as a founder and as a partner. I don't hand you a plan and wish you luck. You bring the goal. I execute it with you.

I run four builds at a time, so every one gets my hands on it.

What clients say

"There have been several occasions when Noël asked a question that completely changed how I was looking at an issue. That is difficult to put a price on."

What people ask first

Is a business advisor the same as a consultant?

No. A consultant usually delivers a diagnosis and a plan. An advisor stays involved while the plan gets executed and adjusts it as things change.

Do small businesses need a business advisor?

If the business already makes money and the owner is still carrying every big decision alone, yes. That's usually the point where growth stalls.

How much does a business advisor cost?

It depends on access. My Private Strategy Session is $2,000 for one decision in 90 minutes. Ongoing work is quoted after a fit call.

What should I look for in a business advisor?

Someone who has run a business, not just studied one. Ask what seats they've sat in and what they've built themselves.

Can an advisor help with sales and marketing?

Mine does. I build and run client acquisition, follow-up and closing systems, not just advise on them.

How fast will I see results?

The 45-Day Revenue Build is built around a single goal and a 45-day window, so you see movement inside that window.
